Role: Senior Grader
Location: Berkshire - based at out Programme Office in Wokingham.
Salary: £32,000-£35,000

So, what is Diabetic Eye Screening? Some people with diabetes develop serious complications with their eyes, called diabetic retinopathy. If they don’t get this treated properly, it can lead to sight loss. Diabetic eye screening is a test to check for eye problems caused by diabetes. The eye screening test can find eye problems before sight is affected. Pictures are taken of the back of the eyes to check for any changes.

As a Senior Grader within our Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, you will play a vital role in maintaining grading excellence, supporting clinical colleagues, and ensuring we uphold both national and InHealth standards.
Based within the programme office, you will be responsible for the accuracy, consistency and development of grading practices across the service, while helping to grow, mentor and support the wider grading and screening team. This is a role for someone who thrives on responsibility, values clinical quality, and enjoys developing others.
What You Will Do
In this key role, you will:
Quality & Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide all levels of diabetic retinopathy grading up to ROG (subject to Clinical Lead sign‑off) in line with NDESP guidance.
- Complete monthly online EQA grading tests and participate fully in MDT meetings.
- Maintain excellent inter‑grader agreement and turnaround times, monitoring performance across the programme.
- Take part in programme QA audits and ensure consistently high-quality grading.
Training, Development & Leadership
- Line-manage Slit Lamp Examiners, including arranging re-accreditation when required.
- Deliver ongoing training to graders and contribute to learning discussions at MDT.
- Assess staff undertaking the Level 3 Health Screener Diploma.
- Upskill team members to ensure adequate cover across all levels of grading.
- Provide constructive feedback at quarterly 1:1 reviews and support continuous improvement.
Operational Excellence
- Become an expert user of Spectra and support colleagues in resolving challenges using sound judgement and problem‑solving skills.
- Ensure all protocols are understood and followed, reviewing them at least quarterly.
- Produce grading reports for the Programme Board.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues via email and telephone throughout the day.
Governance & Compliance
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and complete required IG training.
- Participate in proficiency assessments and act on feedback to maintain high performance.

Essential Skills & Experience
You will have:
- Completed the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Diploma or Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners
- A solid understanding of diabetic retinopathy and screening pathways
- Experience grading at First, Second, Arbitration, DS, and ROG levels
- Strong IT skills, including confidence using Microsoft Office and clinical systems
- Knowledge of data protection and confidentiality requirements
- The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Excellent concentration, attention to detail and time‑management skills
- A flexible, conscientious approach to work
