Introduction:

This role is key to delivering a high-quality Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) service, which supports the early detection of lung cancer and other lung diseases in asymptomatic individuals. The programme targets areas with high disease prevalence to improve early-stage cancer diagnoses and increase access to curative treatment.

As the Responsible Assessor (RA), you will manage participants with abnormal CT results and ensure smooth clinical coordination across the screening pathway. Working under the Clinical Director, you'll collaborate with nurses, clinicians, radiologists, and healthcare teams across primary and secondary care.

What You Will Do

As Responsible Assessor, you will work under the Clinical Director to lead and coordinate the clinical review of patients with actionable findings referred to Screening Review Meetings (SRMs). You’ll ensure timely referrals, clear communication of diagnoses, and continuity of care across the LCS pathway.

Key Duties

  • Oversee and coordinate SRMs in collaboration with the LCS Coordinator, ensuring patient discussions are timely and action plans are communicated and implemented.

  • Act as clinical lead and expert resource in targeted lung health, setting and maintaining high standards of care through evidence-based practice, training, and audit.

  • Develop and implement protocols, policies, and pathways aligned with national standards to enhance service delivery and patient care.

  • Communicate complex findings to patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.

  • Represent the programme at local and regional MDTs and lead SRM presentations for LCS referrals.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist nursing advice across the LCS programme.

  • Work autonomously and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Monitor and evaluate care standards through audit, applying research to support clinical improvements.

  • Ensure adherence to national LCS standards and protocols.

  • Uphold patient safety, infection control, and documentation standards.

Coordination of SRMs

  • Support and oversee the LCS Coordinator in scheduling and managing SRMs at local and network levels.

  • Develop agendas, monitor patient delays, and ensure timely case preparation and distribution.

  • Ensure all action plans from SRMs are recorded and communicated appropriately.

Audit and Quality Assurance

  • Support the Clinical Director in auditing Responsible Assessors, Radiologists, and Clinicians to ensure protocol adherence and data accuracy.

  • Monitor performance through audits of assessments, data quality, and compliance with national standards.

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Ensure real-time data entry throughout the patient pathway to meet national targets.

  • Maintain data integrity and confidentiality, working with cancer tracking systems and databases.

  • Collect, analyse, and present data to internal and external stakeholders, including the National Cancer Registry and Trust governance teams.

  • Contribute to clinical governance meetings and support service improvement based on audit findings.

IT Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Spectra Lung, Cimar, and Cancer Register systems for data recording, monitoring, and reporting.

  • Adheres to Data Protection Act (1998) and Caldicott principles for patient data handling.

General Responsibilities

  • Act as a visible role model, promoting high standards of care and professional behaviour.

  • Facilitate multidisciplinary, patient-centred care and empower patients in their care decisions.

  • Promote inclusive practice and support culturally sensitive care.

  • Provide emotional and clinical support to patients, carers, and staff.

  • Monitor staff training compliance and maintain relevant records.

  • Encourage effective communication and collaboration across the LCS team.

Management Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate strong leadership and supervision of junior/support staff.

  • Support recruitment, resource utilisation, and team retention.

  • Manage complaints and support staff in resolving emotional or psychological concerns.

  • Uphold and contribute to the development of policies and procedures.

  • Represent the LCS programme at relevant meetings, working groups, and committees.

Education, Audit, and Clinical Governance

  • Lead clinical audits and promote a learning culture through teaching and continuous professional development.

  • Contribute to evidence-based practice by developing guidelines, protocols, and policy changes.

  • Use audit outcomes and feedback to drive improvements and manage service changes.

  • Actively support incident reporting and learning from adverse events or complaints.

Educational Responsibilities

  • Promote a reflective and effective learning environment for staff development.

  • Coordinate and deliver CPD and workplace learning, both in-person and remotely.

  • Support team leads in creating a supportive and stimulating culture for professional growth.

  • Encourage cross-sector learning through collaboration with primary, secondary, and tertiary care.

  • Remain current with training curricula and support clinical supervision and coaching.

Professional Conduct

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with LCS partners and stakeholders.

  • Stay informed on current clinical and professional developments.

  • Be accountable to professional standards (e.g., NMC Code) and act in line with organisational values.

  • Engage in ongoing training, clinical supervision, and maintain personal development plans through formal appraisal.

You Will Be
