About the role

We are seeking a Slit Lamp Bio‑microscopy Examiner (SLE) to support the delivery of high‑quality Slit Lamp Bio‑microscopy clinics within the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP). You will work autonomously in community settings, using advanced clinical techniques to identify diabetic retinopathy (DR) and any incidental non‑diabetic eye conditions, in line with frameworks agreed by the Clinical Lead, Senior Grader and Programme Manager.

Alongside SLB clinics, you will contribute to digital screening and grading activities, with opportunities to support audit, research and training.

The role will cover our clinics in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, so a driving license and access to a car is essential for the role.

The closing dates for applications is Friday the 1st May.

What You Will Do

  • Deliver safe, high‑quality patient care as a professionally accountable autonomous practitioner
  • Manage SLB clinics across community locations, using Spectra software to assess the retina and identify DR and other eye conditions
  • Identify and manage urgent referrals, including same‑day referral and failsafe processes
  • Undertake grading at all levels, including Digital Surveillance, OCT and Referral Outcome grading, in line with nationally approved RxMx standards
  • Meet national requirements for annual screening and grading volumes and complete monthly EQA tests
  • Work collaboratively with the wider screening and grading team, contributing to MDTs, audits, research and training
  • Maintain equipment, clinic set‑up, consumables and data synchronisation
  • Ensure strict compliance with data protection, confidentiality, health and safety, and screening protocols
  • Attend meetings, proficiency reviews, EQA visits and annual development reviews
  • Complete mandatory training and maintain SLB accreditation and competency in line with national guidance

About You

You are a confident and empathetic clinician who enjoys working independently while being part of a supportive team. You remain calm in pressured situations and are flexible in travelling to different clinic locations.

You will have:

  • A Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Diploma, Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners, or City & Guilds Diploma in Diabetic Retinopathy
  • At least 12 months’ experience using slit lamps in a diabetic clinic setting
  • Proven experience grading at all levels, including OCT, with strong inter‑grader agreement
  • A good understanding of diabetic retinopathy, data protection and patient confidentiality
